Bangkok, Hiltons Threesixty Bar

The Hilton Millennium, one of Bangkok's newest upmarket hotels, takes advantage of its riverside location with a penthouse bar that has stupendous views across the city. Despite the name, and although you can walk the whole circumference of the bar, the vista isn't strictly on that totals 360 degrees.

Nevertheless, seating does cover a full three quarters of the circumference, and the whole sweep of Bangkok's river is visible, from the docks to the Grand Palace and Nonthaburi, together with the downtown bright lights and some of the southern suburbs.

The windows angle away at 30 degrees, so the adventurous can look straight down to the ground below, and there's an all-glass lift clinging to the outer wall for a breathtaking ride on the way up and down.

Seating is at large round communal tables and two-seater's around the edge, with sofas available in the center of the room. Toward the back is a smoking area, where Cuban cigar smoke curls up to mini chandeliers of molded plastic, hanging like tenpins from the ceiling. They're mainly decorative, it's dark in here.

The hotel has a steakhouse, plus Chinese and International restaurants, but if you don't want a full meal, ThreeSixty has a small menu of items such as mostarda foie gras terrine in port wine, warm lentil salad with goat's cheese, anchovy toast and thyme and risotto, lobster tail and caviar mousseline.

A long list of martinis heads the choice of cocktails, which are mixed at your table side, along with funky sake cocktails, such as Eager Ninja.

ThreeSixty is branded as a "azz bar", but the live music is actually a lounge. So don't come here expecting covers of John Coltrane, or even Pat Metheny. Do come here for a spot of romance with that someone special.
